Family friendly activities for the summer

Everyone’s always so excited for summer to come, but when it finally gets here, boredom usually strikes. If you aren’t traveling, you realize there isn’t much to do. So instead of spending hours in front of the TV or on your phone, here are a few things to keep you occupied!

1. Do an Escape Room

Escape rooms are a fun and affordable experience. There are usually options for all age ranges, and the activity encourages teamwork while also being fun and mysterious to an extent. Below are a couple options in the area

2. Go To a Drive-In Movie

Durbin Crossing usually has a drive-in movie or two in the summer. You can simply drive to the amenity center, park your car, and sit and enjoy the movie! This is a great way to spend time with your family and friends, but to also get out of the house.

3. Make Popsicles

You don’t need to go to the store to have popsicles! If you have a mold, which can usually be found for less than $25, you simply have to pour in a juice or concentrate, maybe even add fruit in the mold, and let it freeze. This is a quick, fun , and refreshing activity that kids will definitely enjoy.

4. Go Hiking

There are some really nice trails in the area, so one thing you can do is take a hike. If you don’t like the idea of all that walking, you can choose to bike too. Some great places to just walk are Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens and Deep Creek State Forest. If you’re more into biking, definitely go to Julington Durbin Creek Nature Preserve and Alpine Groves Park.

5. Go Stargazing

The night sky is always beautiful, but in the summer, some of the best constellations can be seen. You can sit right out on your driveway or in your backyard, but you can find some of the best views at local spots like Mickler Beach and Hanna Park. If you choose to go, make sure it’s a clear night to get the best view.
